Why does it happen. This soiling is called filtration soiling because it comes from air passing through the carpet as it is attempting to get through the crack between the carpet and the baseboard or under a closed door. Dark dirt marks around the edges of your carpet are caused by an issue called filtration soiling. Air can seep around the tack strips better.

But you may have noticed that your carpet gets especially dirty sometimes even black along the walls and corners of the room. What causes black lines along the edge of your carpet. Thick carpet padding covers most of the floor but there usually isn t padding at the edges. Filtration soiling occurs as a result of air being forced into the room or space at a higher rate than it can escape from the same area via the ventilation system.

Air moves across the floor and as a result dirt dust and contaminants accumulate near the wall. Cleaning your carpet by the skirting boards also called baseboards is fairly easy if you have a crevice attachment for your vacuum cleaner and a scrub brush. To clean up these stains you need water and vigorous scrubbing. Instead there are tack strips to hold the carpet in place.

Sometimes called filtration lines they also occur along the bottom edges of closed doors and they can be difficult to remove. You might have tried to remove these black or gray stains with vigorous vacuuming and spot treatments to find they just won t go away or if you get the stains to fade they keep reappearing. You may need to use detergent for more persistent stains. Filtration soiling occurs when there is an imbalance in the air ventilation of the room.
